Cheers! of the Day 08-27-2012

August 27, 2012

Today, the Cheers! of the Day is more of a farewell. It’s been a couple of days since his passing but the busy life I have kept me from giving a timely farewell to the man who walked on the moon, exactly 14 years before I was born, on July 20th 1969. Neil Armstrong, born and raised in my home state of Ohio was a pioneer like no other person before him and we should all raise our glass and say “Cheers!” to Mr. Armstrong for all that he accomplished!

Born on August 5th, 1930 in Wapakoneta, Ohio, Armstrong joined the NASA ranks in 1962 after spending time in Navy during the Korean War and earning degrees from Purdue (undergraduate) and a the University of Southern California (Master’s). Just four years after joining NASA, Armstrong made his first in 1966 as part of the Gemini 8 mission.

After that initial flight, Armstrong was as Mission Commander of the Apollo 11 mission that put Armstrong and fellow astronaut Buzz Aldrin on the moon. That mission would be Armstrong’s last. For his efforts, he received the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the Congressional Space Medal of Honor and the Congressional Gold Medal. Neil Armstrong was 82 years old.
